Urtica Dioica L.

BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION - Perennial plant with very branched yellow rhizome. It has numerous stems up to 1.20 cm high, quadrangular and covered with stinging hairs. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, pointed, rounded at the base and covered with stinging hairs on both sides. The flowers are unisexual, green, grouped, located in the armpits of the highest leaves of the stem. The fruit is an achene. It blooms from June to October.

COLLECTION - The leaves or the whole plant in the months of June and July.

DRUG - Flowery sum.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLES - Nitrogenous substances, proteins, amino acids, amines, flavonoids, essential oil, chlorophyll, carotenoids, vitamins of group B and C and numerous organic acids.

PROPERTIES - Haemostatic, astringent, antidiarrheal, hematopoietic, diuretic, chloride-urea-promoting, pancreatic secretion stimulant, hypoglycemic, remineralizing, reconstituent, aperitif, collagen, antiseptic, pectoral and respiratory antispasmodic.

USES and APPLICATIONS - In inflammatory processes of the urinary tract, in the treatment of renal lithiasis, as adjuvant in antirheumatic and antogotea therapy, in fatigue, convalescence, hemorrhages, diarrhea and enteritis.
